The film tells the story of three people for a year: a son (Magimel) diagnosed with cancer, a mother (Deneuve) suffering from helplessness and a doctor (Cécile de France) to do her job: One year and four seasons for these three characters to deal with the disease, to tame it, and to understand what it means to die while alive.。敦煌，是一个象征，也是一个历史的缩影，见证着中国两千多年来的历史变迁，记录着东西方文明的往来、碰撞、交流与融合。敦煌对各路文明的融合传达着我们这个民族对文明的态度：包容、自信和融合。纪录片《大敦煌》将以敦煌作为史实例证，讲述东西方商贸交流、文化交流、艺术交流的历史，通过对一个个今天的历史遗存的记录和讲述，来透视敦煌对于世界文明的影响，展现中华民族两千年的命运变迁和追求探索的精神，进而印证和传达中国一以贯之的“和而不同”和“美美与共”的文明价值观。。
