剧集根据吴林的小说《金花铁掌》改编，从战马为切入口，讲述了抗日战争时期，赵家马掌铺少爷赵大旗（吴樾饰）在机缘巧合之下参加了新四军并一路成长，与吴州国小老师孙佳慧（余心恬饰）相识相恋，历经生死劫难一路并肩战斗的故事。。故事发生在一个风景秀丽的英国小镇中，安吉拉带着儿子卢克像往常一样来到了儿童游乐场，两人都以为今天也只不过是他们日复一日的平凡生活的一个缩影而已，可是，悲剧发生了，当卢克离开家人和其他孩子一起玩耍时，安吉拉被一个神秘的凶手杀死了。而唯一的目击证人是一个名叫露西（莱斯利·夏普 Lesley Sharp 饰）的女人。 妮娜（因迪拉·瓦玛 Indira Varma 饰）和搭档鲍比（罗伯特·格林尼斯特 Robert Glenister 饰）负责调查此案，根据露西的证言，这个凶手很可能是一个流窜在各国进行跨国作案的连环杀手。可是鲍比却坚持认为，胡言乱语有些神经质的露西才是真正的凶手。。Imagine growing up in a Soho loft in the late 1970s and falling asleep to the sounds of your mother wielding a chainsaw in the next room.
